Mosquito
Control
Your
best bet to prevent acquiring West
Nile virus and other mosquito-borne
illnesses is to control
the numbers of mosquitoes and to minimize the opportunity
for mosquitoes to bite.
Steps you can take to help control mosquitoes include:
- eliminating
standing water in your yard. Mosquitoes breed and multiply in standing
water.
- repelling
mosquitoes from your living space.
- changing
water in birdbaths at least weekly
- using
screens
and netting to keep mosquitoes out of your home
- removing
old tires or any unused containers that might hold water
- using
BTI
products like Mosquito
Dunks in water gardens or ponds
- removing
algae from ponds. Mosquito larvae feed on algae and other small organisms
which live in water
To reduce your exposure
to mosquitoes:
- avoid unnecessary
outdoor activity when mosquitoes are most prevalent, especially at dawn,
dusk and early evening
- wear
mosquito proof
clothing like long-sleeved shirts and long pants when
going into mosquito-infested areas
- use an
insect
repellent
